Meet Dr. Brad Kane, Calgary, Alberta
CV

Hi, I’m Brad and I would really like to serve Canadian chiropractors with the CCA. I am passionate advocate for things that are important and committed to driving positive change. I’m a 20+ year DC. I have served on Councils, as President of the Alberta College and Association of Chiropractors for 5 years. I was inaugural chair of the College of Chiropractors of Alberta now, past chair I am GMRC chair and board member for the Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation I have also served as director with the Federation of Canadian Chiropractic Regulators (FCC) for 6 years. I own and operate a large multidisciplinary chiropractic clinic on the west end of Calgary, and most importantly, my kids think I’m cool. That may be my biggest accomplishment. I am hoping to work with the CCA and continue to serve the best profession.

I have extensive experience and training in governance. I oversaw the ACAC many years, through numerous government bills and crises. I guided Council and staff through the Covid-19 response, developing protocols that were adopted by regulated professions across Canada. I also oversaw in hiring 2 CEOs and a Registrar. While in an advocacy role, I tried to find ways to uniquely connect to our membership and instill a sense of transparency and trust. I led 3 strategic planning sessions for the organization and its members I the most professional and influential way. I’m exceptionally proud of the work I have done with my teams over the year and am eager to sink my teeth into new challenges at the national level, in assisting our profession to grow and prosper.

A strategic plan should not have tiered values. The member, or the stakeholder may hold one in higher regard, but that is for them. As the question asks, what stood out to me, I’ll answer it in this way. In my board experience, as incredible as a board may by, the vital machinery of the organization, the staff have to be resources and, as the plan states, “empowered.” When the people who support the vision of the board and live the values of he organization, the connection to membership and stakeholders become organic. With that piece in place, the other pression objective, for our time, is changing the conversation. Chiropractic care has never been better positioned as a primary care profession than we are now. We need to seize the levers in front of the profession.

This is a difficult question as I think this area is changing and evolving quicker than emails. A truly National organization must represent all members and advocate to all areas of our population, not just those that can afford our services. One aspect of chiropractic care is that it is private health care, by designation. To truly hold diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to bridge the gap to be involved in the primary care of Every Canadian, we must be accessible to all Canadians regardless of gender, identity, economic status, etc. A national organization is truly National, if it strives to provide reach and personalized care to all Canadians, of all shades, stripes, religions, classes, and identities. Understanding this is a giant task, the organization needs to ensure its viability and prioritize areas of greatest impact, without sacrificing the strength of the message. Admittedly, staged prioritization is an uncomfortable necessity, the organization/board embracing and constantly testing fiduciary responsibilities will, in time encompass all Canadians.

The strategic objective of shifting the conversation is crucial as it fosters growth within the profession and boosts utilization rates. By improving public understanding of chiropractic as an evidence-based practice, it enables interdisciplinary integration into Canada’s healthcare system. This integration is essential for facilitating effective communication and collaboration among healthcare professionals, ultimately enhancing patient care and outcomes.

1. Advocating fair policies and practices as this represents the interests of chiropractors of diverse backgrounds, including race, ethnicity, gender and orientation, religion, nationality, age, disability, socioeconomic status, and marital or parental status. By utilizing the educational resources provided by CCA, we can improve our ability to manage a more diverse patient base.

2. Having the ability to be inclusive in diverse representations in leadership. This encompasses being inclusive to minority populations, which ensures diverse perspectives and experiences are represented at decision-making levels, sending a powerful message of empowerment to minority members.

3. Collaborating with other stakeholders to ensure the promotion of equity and access to healthcare.

4. Continuing research and education within the field to better understand different cultures and the presentations that patients bring to practice.

In summary, the association serves as a catalyst for creating an equitable and inclusive environment within its field.
